Building out the Warren

This time around, I want to create a greater sense of place in “Furry Widdle Bunny”. While the 1st two months of strips (already queue!) are the familiar sparse environments, I’m building out 3D models of the more frequent locations that the strip will occur in.

First up, for December and January strips, is the common living space in Simon’s co-op house. I’ve got a large piece of that work done and just need to put in things like couches and tables and such.

Who’s Joe Meek?

My friend Tim is a Joe Meek super-fan. When I first met him, back around 2001 or so, I had to keep asking him who Joe Meek was, and I could see it was exasperating him. Eventually the name stuck in my head, and I no longer fear ejection from his car.

I drew this for him around 2003, I think. If you don’t know who Joe Meek is, and you would like to avoid immolation by satellite, check out his Wikipedia entry and/or watch the biopic “Telstar”.

Expanding the Borders

Some times three panels just aren’t enough. Then you have to figure out where to fit an extra one. Here’s what I wound up with for the layout of a Furry Widdle Bunny strip I worked on this afternoon.

4 Panel Layout

Crazy, right? Even with this I’ll wind up with art breaking through one of the panels…

Learning to Draw Again

I plan to dive back into producing webcomics later this year, and as part of my preparations I’m learning how to draw on the computer with a spanking new tablet and pen. Wendi advised me to begin by drawing over text. Letters are comprised of the basic shapes that underline any drawing, so it’s a good way to make the adjustment to working digitally.

So I fired up my drawing app and wrote a long sentence in a word balloon.

Text-Based Drawing Goal

Then I took my first stab at digital art.

I’m going to need just a little more practice.

How to Get Your Hands on Wild Women!

“Wild Women of the Kitty-Kat Galaxy!” is now available for purchase! It’s listed, along with “Dope Fiends of the Zombie Cafe!” and the “Plastic Farm” issues with Wendi’s artwork, on the DC Conspiracy Hula Cat store!

DC Conspiracy is a comic collective centered around Washington DC, and Rafer happens to be a member. He’s volunteered to handle orders of the Billy and Gravely comics, so show him some love and check out the Rafer Roberts store while you’re picking up your copy of “Wild Women…”!

You might poke around the other DC Conspiracy stores, too. There’s a lot of good comics just waiting for you to read them!

It Came From Out of SPACE

SPACE is over for another year, and it’s left me exhausted but enthusiastic! So many great creators and appreciative comic fans; it’s like a weekend spent just loving the medium.

Special thanks to Ka-Blam for getting the copies of “Wild Women of the Kitty-Kat Galaxy!” printed and shipped in time, despite my tight turnaround time. The comic was well-received, and more than a few people asked if a 3rd Billy and Gravely story might be in the works. (The short answer is “yes”. The long answer is not short.)

Much love to Rafer, who let me squat at the Plastic Farm table! (I promise I’ll pay for my own next time!) We talked of many things, some of which were even related to comics, and he introduced me to a lot of fine folk with whom I got tipsy on Saturday night. I’m not sure how badly I embarrassed myself, but I seem to recall one conversation about Wonder Woman Underoos not coming in adult sizes…

Also, an awkward man-hug for Matt Dembecki, who uncomplainingly drove us around a bit and agreed with my proposition that the early, werewolf-bitten Moon Knight was the best.

It’s good to be back in business!

Comics for SPACE Have Shipped!

50 copies of WILD WOMEN OF THE KITTY-KAT GALAXY! left a post office sorting facility very early this morning. If luck holds, I should be able to pick them up on the way to SPACE on Friday!

In the meantime, I’m as keyed up as a cat watching a laser pointer. Speaking of which, have a 2-panel sequence of cat women doing just that!

Safety tip: cat women are susceptible to laser pointers!

SPACE is being held on April 13-14 in Columbus, Ohio. For more information, check out the SPACE site.

Comics Ordered for SPACE

The test printing of “Wild Women of the Kitty-Kat Galaxy!” came in, and it looked downright spiffy!

Hot off the press. Owowow!

Hot off the press. Owowow!

So I ordered a mess of them to bring with me to SPACE! They’re promised to arrive by the day I’ll be heading down to Columbus, so we’ll trust in that. Worst case, I’ll have that proof copy for folks to look at.

Coloring Finished for Wild Women!

Coloring has been completed for “Wild Women of the Kitty-Kat Galaxy!” We’re now working on completing the layout of the comic and getting it in the proper formats for submission to distribution channels.

We’ve learned a lot about how indie comic production has changed since the previous incarnation of Hula Cat, and I’m sure we’ve still got some lessons ahead of us. The important thing is that we’re doing it and will do it more assuredly the next time and each time after that!

My thanks to Rafer and Wendi, who’ve been very patient with and understanding of me throughout this journey. I offer this panel excerpt to allow Billy to say to me what they haven’t. 😉

This actually seems really polite under the circumstances.
