Panel Patter Spotlights Rafer Roberts

Hula Cat friend and collaborator Rafer Roberts is going to SPX, and Panel Patter’s Rob McMonigal has some nice words about what’s in the works.

Panel Patter: SPX Spotlight on Rafer Roberts

If you haven’t read “Nightmare the Rat”, I heartily encourage you to check it out. It’s goofy and unsettling, all at once, and the eponymous tooth-stealing rodent is hardly the weirdest or worst denizen of Hell City.

Billy and Dr. Gravely & IDW!

Earlier this year, Rafer Roberts asked if I’d be interested writing a 2-page Billy and Gravely with a quick turn-around time to appear in a Kickstarter comic anthology: Imaginary Drugs. Would I? Oh, hell yeah! Those sciFI (heavy on the FICTION, light on the science) hooligans are a blast to write, and as “Dope Fiends of the Zombie Cafe” and “Wild Women of the Kitty-Kat Galaxy” demonstrate I love getting Rafer to draw crazy shit.

Over a few emails we worked out a scenario, and the comic came together with a quickness! Then came the news — Imaginary Drugs had been picked up for distribution by IDW!

That’s due out later this year (and believe me you will hear about it!), but first comes the promised Kickstarter release. I just flipped through my PDF proof copy, and It Is Gorgeous!

I’m all a-tingle, I am. 🙂

Coloring Finished for Wild Women!

Coloring has been completed for “Wild Women of the Kitty-Kat Galaxy!” We’re now working on completing the layout of the comic and getting it in the proper formats for submission to distribution channels.

We’ve learned a lot about how indie comic production has changed since the previous incarnation of Hula Cat, and I’m sure we’ve still got some lessons ahead of us. The important thing is that we’re doing it and will do it more assuredly the next time and each time after that!

My thanks to Rafer and Wendi, who’ve been very patient with and understanding of me throughout this journey. I offer this panel excerpt to allow Billy to say to me what they haven’t. 😉

This actually seems really polite under the circumstances.

Wild Women Promo Image #3

Science goes KRUNK! in this panel from the upcoming comic “Wild Women of the Kitty-Kat Galaxy!”

Wendi’s colors draw on Rafer’s work on his Billy and Gravely story “Blargh! The Creature from Kraaka-5!” That was an homage to Jack Kirby, and its aged appearance and classic style was a direct influence on the Wild Women crew!

Rafer’s Art Show

Rafer’s work appeared in a gallery, and the show got a very nice write-up. Read the article

Also, I want a collection of Nightmare the Rat. Like, now.

Covering the Basics: Wild Women Progress Report

Coloring is in progress. If I had to put a percentage to it, without consulting Wendi, I’d hazard approximately A Goodly %. It’s time for me to get off my tuckus to write extra materials and figure out the details of publication.

Meanwhile, check out Rafer’s spiff cover for the comic! Click it! CLICK IT!

Giant spiders! Cat women! Billy and Gravely! I can’t wait to let this out into the world!

Dr. Gravely selects a specimen for his experiment.

This is how I feel whenever Rafer sends new pages.

Hula Cat Comics Returns with Wild Women of the Kitty-Kat Galaxy!

Poster for Wild Women of the Kitty-Kat Galaxy!

Dr. Gravely and Billy don’t like beatniks, zombies, beatnik zombies, or each other! But they’ll have to work together to escape the lair of the Wild Women of the Kitty-Kat Galaxy!

Their out-of-this-world adventure reunites writer Sean Frost and artist Rafer Roberts to continue the adventures of the cantankerous mad scientist and the boy on permanent field trip in this sequel to Hula Cat’s popular Dope Fiends of the Zombie Cafe!
